Mesh only looks correct in Edit Mode

Mesh only looks correct in Edit Mode

I've been trying to fix the topology on someone else's mesh in Blender 2.66, but it keeps reverting back when I switch out of Edit Mode. The object isn't assigned to an armature and the only modifier on it is Mirror X.
 On the left is the corrected mesh in Edit Mode. On the right, the same mesh in Object Mode.
